Negative easement is a ban placed on a property owner, which prohibits this owner to use his/her real estate in a way that goes against other easements. For example, if a piece of land has an easement that allows neighbour to cross it in order to get to a specific place, a negative easement could forbid the owner of the land to build any kind of fences that restrict such movement, even though in other circumstances buidling such a fence would be completely legal for the owner.
